SOUTH PACIFIC

Islands, Legends, and Beaches

In planning a tour to the South Pacific, I had several things in mind. I wanted to include a country in Polynesia that is true to traditions, beautiful, and whose people are friendly to others. Western Samoa stood out. Wishing to include an island country in Melanesia that provided cultural diversity, beautiful reefs, and a rich history, Fiji was the answer.

Stan invites you to join him for an eco-cultural adventure in the South Pacific that features small hotels, home stays, farm visits, and local foods. During this journey, called South Pacific: Islands, Legends, and Beaches, participants will experience the traditional charm of the island paradises of Fiji and Western Samoa. The nineteen day journey, is an exceptional travel value. The program is designed to allow ample time in each island country and to allow you to meet Samoans and Fijiians, and to experience their unique music, dances and cultures. The tour will include visits to pristine natural areas, historical sites, and archeological ruins. Activities will include swimming, snorkeling, and walking.

The tour is designed to take you to two regions of the South Pacific, Polynesia (Western Samoa) and Melanesia (Fiji). Although there are many similarities between the two, the differences are intriguing. We will explore some unique characteristics of the two regions.

A special effort will be made to acquaint participants with cultural and historical information that will bring each island country "alive." As well, we will make an effort to make significant personal contact with Fijiians and Samoans in order to further understanding between cultures. There will an opportunity to volunteer for village stays on the island of Savaii, Western Samoa. This will involve "roughing it" a bit, relative to our expectations, but could be a once in a lifetime learning experience.

Snorkeling will be a group activity (not mandatory) on the island of Taveuni (Fiji), when we stay at the Garden Isle Resort. If you are a diver, you could arrange a dive through the dive shop. If our schedule allows, we could also take short snorkeling trips in Western Samoa.

Breakfasts and lunches will be provided. Small restaurants will be featured.
