This tour will deal with evolution and natural history during a cruise through the Galapagos Islands. Projects of the Darwin Research Station on Santa Cruz will be examined. "In the footsteps of Darwin", participants will examine evolution, volcanism, natural history and ecology in these remote and isolated volcanic islands.
The small group will explore the islands with stimulating local experts. There will be nightly presentations, speakers, or discussions. The group will frequently go ashore for short hikes and snorkelling trips and to examine the unique fauna and flora of the islands.
The tour will also visit the beautiful city of Quito and its environs. Quito is in a high valley, surrounded by snow-capped volcanoes. It is one of UNESCO's world cultural heritage sites and perhaps the most interesting South American city. It has a rich cultural tradition, colorful local music, centuries-old architecture, and a variety of museums. The tour will include a visit to Inca ruins and the famous Indian Market of Otavalo, where weavings and handicrafts can be purchased.
Guides:
Stan Kruschwitz has visited Ecuador three times and has been taking groups
on trips since the 1980s. Additionally, local naturalists and guides will
lend their expertise and assist participants in understanding the unique fauna,
flora, and culture of Ecuador and the Galapagos.
Facilities:
The cruise will be aboard a yacht designed for travel in the islands.
Smaller dories will transport the group ashore for field trips. The group
will stay in small hotels in Quito, and Otavalo.
